Bloodhound Q50 x VonOff1700 “Shoot Out”
Crazy beat: It sounds like classic Southern snap-and-whistle crossed with East Coast trash compactor club bang. You know? Those double-time drums activate the Dunkin’ and suddenly it’s 2007 and I’m wearing an oversized white tee with neon shorts. The track drew me in, but the back-and-forth Midwest reality rapping is strong, too. At one point in the video, the duo rocks in front of what looks to be a painting of a warped red solo cup. [Editor’s note: The track is from the Souja Boy classic “Let Me Get Em.” Thank you to user “itsthevoid” for the reminder. Sometimes, my dumb ass can’t keep all the music I have heard in my lifetime straight.]
Rabbit Crime “grain silo jump”
The new 909 Worldwide compilation is overwhelming. It’s 39 bursts of neo-rave insanity, and it’s going to take me a minute to make sense of it all. Taken as a whole, though, it seems to provide an OK survey of what’s going on out there in the warehouses filled with smoke and fog and phat pants. One specific track that got me bopping: “grain silo bounce,” which flips frantic stabs over breakbeats and party gabber kicks. Upon further consideration, those kicks might be more of a hard house thing. Details matter.
A lot of rave this week. What do you want me to do? Post something off of the new MJ Lenderman record? (For whatever it’s worth, I think that “Wristwatch” and “Rudolph” are good songs.) Anyway, back to the hard stuff, in particular XXHARDBIT3S, who just put out a satisfying collection of rugged breakbeats that rock in a nice space between a few different jungle variants. “24/7” has a jump-up feel. It works with a classic NYC acapella; I’m not going to say what it is, but I am going to ask you all where the line is—when does a sample get obvious enough that it can’t not be called out? I’m stupid.
Speaking of fast music, Smooth Floridian maniac 454 has a new tune. Or at least I think it’s new. Somehow I missed the EP he did with Surf Gang last year. There’s too much music... In classic form, the video gives you the song twice: quick and regular. The song is a love letter to a region that the NYC-based rapper no longer resides in, to the smoggy palm-scraped air and the speedy remixes. But I can’t say for certain where the vid was shot. Probably not Florida.
I had the nap of the year while listening to the new Seefeel record. And that’s not a shot at the group, who remain one of the greatest of all time when it comes to this post-rock, IDM, downtempo, whatever type of shit. I'm simply trying to say that the music provided the perfect coolant to my overly-caffeinated body. I drifted out of a slow panic and into something resembling temporary relief.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Sunday Club w/ Finn & BFTT, 9/1/2024
Regular readers of the blog are all too aware of our love for Finn. He just knows how to play dance music in the best British way, both studied and fun. A bit of an aside, but I keep forgetting to share a very good TikTok I came across a few weeks ago. It’s of a hardcore band called Big Ass Truck performing a live concert at a pizza shop. Here it is. Enjoy your weekend, people.
