“I wanna go back to the old shit, me and my cousins don’t bond like we used to / I only got one more chance to better my life, I already used two.” Nino Paid throws his DMV-style rhyme schemes over some contemporary jungle business. In the middle of writing this entry, “Champagne” segued nicely into “Nursery Rhyme / Breather” by Badly Drawn Boy and UNKLE. Both songs are on an ultra-secret 86-hour playlist I’ve been building over the past year. If you want access to that, you are going to have to subscribe to the ultra-premium tier of the John’s Music Blog Patreon, which doesn’t exist.
F.G.S. is currently America’s preeminent dealer of Americana. Recommended for fans of Lana Del Rey, Kim Deal, and Joanne Robertson. The Breeders thing didn’t really click until Eric F. dropped the ref on me a few days ago, and now I can’t unhear it. It’s been fun helping to get this music out there—just like it was fun putting out that Odwalla seven-inch eight years ago. I still got some deadstock available; hit me up.
E L U C I D “THE WORLD IS DOG”
While “THE WORLD IS DOG” leans dangerously close to the kind of post-post Death Grips muddle that seems to be beloved by certain corners of the internet music ecosystem, it has a fire funk-punk pocket that clicks into focus at around the 30 second mark and really starts moving a minute in. The no-wave squiggle outro is legit enough that I think it might be haunted by the ghost of Troubleman Unlimited Records.
Warning, warning: You are now entering the jangle zone. “Airlift” is winsome guitar music made to accompany the falling leaves and the pumpkin spice lattes and all that. It’s got twee America sweatered-up and saluting. Also: “So bury me at Pepperidge Farms” is a bar.
LSDXOXO “GHOST (Downhill2k01 Remix)”
We started with some jungle, and we are going to end with some jungle! Really, though, both tracks are more jungle-related than actual jungle—jungle in quotes. Whatever the case, LSDXOXO’s touring DJ lament is flipped with clubby breakbeats; to add to the troubadour feeling, one synth sounds remotely like a harmonica.
MIX OF THE WEEK: HiTech B2B Fullbodydurag @ The Lot Radio 07-13-2024
With the news of a new HiTech single, I went back and listened to a little back-to-back the crew did with Fullbodydurag a few months ago. It’s an hour of fast Midwest dance music—ghettotech, electro bass, footwork, juke—done with style and energy. There are a lot of big choons here: choons I wasn’t familiar with; choons I wasn’t able to Shazam; choons that sample other choons I love; new choons; old choons…
