Lil Kevo 303 “Toonz From The Crypt 280iv200iv”
I’m reporting live from the John’s Music Blog headquarters with an update: It’s been a major breakbeat week over here. First, an interview with American jungle legend Dev/Null, and now a track from the new Lil Kevo 303 record, which, it must be noted, was the reason I was able to link up with Dev/Null in to begin with: He was in New York, playing at Kevo’s record release show. No doubt, it was a spirited night of high-energy music, much like this track. It compacts hours of rave excitement into the length of bathroom break.
OhThatsMizz x Sturdyyoungin “BUMBAA”
The best New Orleans bounce tune I have heard all year comes from two Philly dudes. “BUMBAA” is a TikTok hit that has been bouncing around for a minute now, but I haven’t come across any coverage of it. The track is driven by an R&B sample that, according to research, can be traced to a few different sources. The beat’s skeletal foundation always threatens to let loose. The chorus happens multiple times in less than a minute and a half.
Breaks of a different brand. urika’s bedroom rocks with the kind of smudgy indie headnodder style that seems to be quite popular nowadays. Some budding young music journalist could coin a term for it. Slip hop? Before you say anything, just remember… John’s Music Blog is free.
“Michael Myers / Come through and I’m slicing shit.” There’s been plenty of wicked rap this holiday season. Myaap is in full Halloween mode; she rides those signature Milwaukee 8th-note claps as they clash with stray knife clangs. While we are in the region—and while we are talking horrorcore—Chuckyy’s brand new single is a remarkable piece of music.
I promise that next week's edition of The Report will be breakbeat free. Until then, we are going hog wild. 4am Kru are a contemporary jungle duo known for their live shows. I’m sure “Pianos Raining Down” goes off at one of those functions—it’s the platonic ideal of a piano rave tune. It has diva vocals. It has a Yorkshire rave flip. It has a tempo change, which wrecked me sitting here in New York City just looking at my laptop. I can’t imagine how hard it would've hit if I were on drugs in a field somewhere in the Midlands.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Martin Meyer “Halloween 2024 Mixtape”
Enough with the breakbeats! It’s time to rock. Heartland punk legend Martin Meyer of Soup Activists and Lumpy & The Dumpers throws down the perfect mix to play as you throw bite-sized Mounds bars into plastic pumpkins.
That 4AM Kru track is ridiculous.
