Quick note: I updated the Underdog Pop Playlist, which I created to contextualize my new project RUSTBELT. Listen to it, on Spotify or YouTube or Apple Music. OK, here comes The Report…
Duke Deuce (feat. Lil Thad, Dubba G & Glockianna) “RESPECT”
Duke Deuce’s newest record is unrelenting. It doesn’t have a single bad song. This posse cut is a standout for me, and Glockianna’s grand finale verse stands out within the standout. Ken Burns needs to do a miniseries on crunk music.
Ice Spice “Munch (So Drove Club Remix)”
Not many are as good as So Drove when it comes to club music bootlegs. Drove’s take on Ice Spice’s late summer NYC burner cranks the RPM and makes me want to stare at a strobe light until I pass out.
Wolf Eyes “Psychoplasmic Plunger”
If there is one thing I learned from occasionally “diving into the analytics” of my previous newsletter, it is that my modest readership rarely clicked on any of the noise music links I posted. Obviously, if I cared about clicks I would probably write a long essay about how Taylor Swift and Kanye West are the “ying and yang of millennial narcissism,” or something dumb like that. Where was I? Ah yes. New Wolf Eyes. Fried!
Some might say I am “posting mid” by dropping this Spotifycore Zoomer anthem, but you know what? If you can deny this chorus you are a very different person than me.
Here’s the facts: the feeling I get from listening to music is not one that I can also get from attending a reading or looking at a painting. Which means that some major part of me will forever be an intellectually stunted teenager. I’ll never forget when I first heard “Tipsy.” It was New Years Eve 2003 and I was in the backseat of a Volvo.
Gonna keep it 100 with you people. I heard this Kpop song while standing in line at a Starbucks in Bay Ridge. And I loved it.
MIX OF THE WEEK: DJ Christreater on 91.7 WMSE 10/27/22
Christreater is a Milwaukee legend. I don’t even know where to begin: the maniac garage band he fronts; the upscale sausage restaurant he co-owns; the rap reissue label he co-runs; the fact that he just did a full tour opening for Jack White as a DJ and hypeman. I actually caught most of this three hour fill-in set live: Chris is in full funky spacey spiritual mode here. Put it this way… The man owns a lot of records.
