DJ Sliink X GloRilla “FNF 2 (JerseyClub)”
One of the best rap songs of the year gets the Jersey Club Freakout treatment by a legend of the style. I’ll never forget the first time I heard the Sliink classic “Vibrate.” I knew club music would never be the same again. Another good club song with a pager sample is “Pagers Blowing Up” by DJ Kenny B. That is a record I will never sell, though I just checked and it is somehow going for $100 on Discogs? Still haven’t figured out this blog’s hyperlink policy. As it stands, my choices seem pretty arbitrary. There is a war going on inside my brain.
Let’s keep it on that club music tip, because it’s the music we all love. “Pop Shit” is essentially pop punk. I could also hear it ringing out during a game of Dance Dance Revolution. And the chord progression reminds me a bit of a certain Nelly/Kelly Rowland classic. I wonder if these kids have heard Sicko Mobb.
Why not stay on that Uptempo American Dance Music tip for even a little bit longer? I recently found a Spotify playlist called “BAY AREA FREESTYLE & BASS” and I’ve been banging it quite a bit. It reminded me of this 90s classic, which is from Atlanta and not the Bay and is sung by the voice behind “My Boo” by Ghost Town DJ’s. It uses pretty much the same sounds as that song and I think it’s just as good. Nothing beats that choral pad. I am thankful for freestyle bass.
Was on the fence, but I’ve come around. Taylor Swift shot through the tekno bass cannon? There is an outside shot that this is what country music radio sounds like in a decade.
Pig In The City “Live At Pine Cone Castle Minneapolis 7/12/22”
The act of judging someone else’s creative output can make me feel a little queasy. Writing this blog is a good reminder that I should be writing more songs. But I love music even when I don’t really like it. So I blog on. Can someone hook me up with an SEO gig? Where was I? Oh yeah, here is a nice rickety funky punky band playing in a living room. Found it during a deep slog session into contemporary DIY documentation. It was one of the few things that seemed kind of special. I love it when bands play in living rooms. The internet tells me Pig In The City features members of Neo Neos and Mystic Inane. But other than that they have no online presence. Maybe they’ve already broken up. Maybe they were just a fun low stakes summer band…
MIX OF THE WEEK: Boosterhooch “what kind of music do u play?”
Another typically great entry into Finn’s “Mixtape Club” series. This one is all over the damn place, but keeps things fun and fucked throughout. So many great transitions. There is even a dembow Crazy Town flip. It mashes up “Work It.” This is the good shit, people.
