“Ay Bay Bay” is so classic that it might as well be Motown or The Sonics. We all remember Hurricane Chris. How could we forget? 2007 was a movie. In case you did forget, this cut from six months ago will wake you up. It’s smooth as hell and even goes double time, with the club kicks.
I love listening to WFMU because that’s where I hear Swedish free jazz and avant-jam bands and all sorts of things I don’t think about so much but sound good within the left-of-the-dial flow. I heard this on The Frow Show at some point and enjoyed it. Off a record called “The Parable Of The Poet.”
Lil B “Afrikantis (Full Album)”
Speaking of avant-jazz, Lil B fucked around and made an entire free MIDI record. Going to need to spend some time with this.
My pick off the new PinkPantheress EP. Maybe the best song The Postal Service never wrote. The chorus is great. Is that a Zoomer Whoop?
Soulful H-Town winter music. As Streetz CultureTV put it in a YouTube comment: “Sauce done realized his lane.......just added 10 more years to his career.” Then they dropped a fire emoji, a “100” emoji, and another fire emoji.
I’ve had this song stuck in my head all week. If you don’t speak Heartland, Bash & Pop was or maybe still is Tommy Stinson’s post-Replacements band. They put out a record in 1993 and then another one in 2017. This one is from the 93 joint and I think there is a different timeline where it maybe could’ve been a hit. If this shit dropped post-Hootie? It’s a fucking wrap!
One of the million rap songs I missed this year. 100 Gecs co-produced and it sounds a little bit like their take on Bay Area mob music. Pretty hard.
MIX OF THE WEEK: DJ R3LL & DJ Kiff “Cuff Yo Chick”
No doubt about it: it’s been quite the year for Jersey club. Billdifferen’s top 100 countdown of 2022 Jersey tracks is almost too overwhelming for me to start with. But I need to get into it. This mix, though? This mix is from 2011. It’s a reminder of where things were a decade or so ago in the “club music space.” It’s less blown out and frantic, for sure. But it holds up as a perfect document of American Energy Music Supreme.
