Oozing Wound “The Good Times (I Don’t Miss ‘Em)”
During a recent recording trip to Chicago, I got some major head intel that the next full length from Windy City Heshers Oozing Wound would be heavy on that Bleach tip. And they were not wrong, but there’s also a song that sounds like “Scentless Apprentice.” Ultimately, this whole record is timeless cold weather Midwestern sludge. Strap on those headphones and power through the wintery mix.
Luh Tyler (Feat. Trapland Pat) “Can’t Move Wrong”
Luh Tyler’s youthful vocal fry is like ASMR to me. The beat sounds like a Michigan bassline took a vacation to Florida.
A lot of good things here: good band name, good song length (over 11 minutes), good lyrics. I saw New York live a few weeks ago at this party and was impressed by how low energy it was. It was the ill extreme lazy style. 25 percent more and it would’ve been boring, but it was so cutty that it felt new. It was like electroclash on Xanax. Laptop on the floor, performers on the floor; iTunes visualizer on, sweatpants on. My dumb ass couldn’t figure out the band’s name, so I let the show wash over me. I basked in the lazypunk mystery. But then, a plot twist. I just happened to be listening to Silva Kastel’s NTS show and guess what she played first? “Makeout.” I wonder if this band has heard of Odwalla88/1221.
MarijuanaXO, TGE L Masi “Dead & Gone”
Milwaukee rap is in an exciting place right now, but there’s too much music and I’m overwhelmed. I’m a busy person. I have to write and record my little pop rock songs. But that doesn’t mean I’m not listening. Case in point is this high energy George Michael flip. Chaotic back-to-back Rustbelt Rapping at its finest.
I don’t have anything all that interesting to say about it, but this record has meant a lot to me.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Catchdubs & Mark Ronson “Radio Radio”
2006 was an interesting year for “DJ culture.” This mix is a good time capsule of a transitional moment in time when indie rock kids were discovering Lil Wayne and older rap DJs were trying to figure out how to wear skinny jeans. Next week I will give you the guide to bloghouse that nobody asked for.
