Majorie-W.C. Sinclair “Astigmatism”
Oi—you got some Evanora Unlimited in my Marjorie-W.C. Sinclair! I’m not sure if that’s the best or the worst sentence I’ve written in a minute. Anyway: Here, the dual-pronged Bay Area artist adds some EBM pummel to his rap alter ego, and the result is a choon good enough to rock a crew of cyber goths at a suburban Hot Topic. The whole new Majorie project has some of the more interesting underground rap beats I’ve heard in a minute, like Front 242 producing for SOB X RBE.
London post-genre legend Klein’s “Blow The Whistle” was low-key the noise track of 2024, and now she’s back with a record that goes deeper into the world of distortion. My pick is the album opener, which combines woozy Auto-Tune bars with free rock moves that might even stump Thurston. Tip!
Merzbow “A. Tsubute Mosaic Part 1”
From the new school to the old school: I don’t know, something about this recent Merzbow is just hitting for me. I’m aware that attempting to talk about the subtleties of a harsh noise wall can quickly veer into delusional sommelier territory, but there is a certain kind of textural variance and compositional flow here that is, I cannot deny, “tickling my domepiece” just right. Blogging isn’t healthy.
A few weeks ago, 2Rare dropped a flip of Rod Lee’s eternal Baltimore club classic “Feel Me.” It’s already off of streaming. What’s up? Did Rod hit them with a cease-and-desist? At least it’s still up on this YouTube.
The talky and shouty and sardonic electro of “He Needs Me” sounds like it could’ve been on a blog in 2004 or a seven-inch in 1980, but the band name is 100 percent 2025. And you are not going to find a Snapchat reference in a Chicks On Speed song.
The highlight of the new Luhh Dyl record remains a single he released last fall. It’s a fusion of luxury-signifying boom bap production and contemporary Michigian mumble, sitting on just the right side of middlebrow. It can be a game of inches sometimes. Speaking of, let’s talk Super Bowl snacks. What are you people cheffing up? Drop some recipes in the comments.
ROCKER OF THE WEEK: Bob Mould “Neanderthal”
It’s good to hear new music from the triple OG Bob Mould, and it’s even better that it’s two minutes of banging no-compromise rock done up in the signature style. Rocker of the Week? Rocker of the damn century!
Oh fuck this Femcels song god damn.
