Fishbone is back, with the damn near original lineup, and they are on… Fat Wreck Chords? Hey, why not. Here we have some straight-up ska, but I hope the band has at least a few funk punk bangers on deckington. In a post-Turnstile world, that might just go off. And who would be more worthy? Watch the Fishbone doc, if you haven’t already.
Fully freaked techno bass from an NC producer, out now on Jubilee’s Magic City imprint. This is that Carolina BBQ electro, that vinegar sauce BBQ electro. Maybe get Petey Pablo to jump on a remix? Just an idea: I’m full of dumb ones.
100 Gecs “I Got My Tooth Removed”
Of course I like 100 Gecs. I wore a suit with a skinny tie when I was 11 and then I wore a neon windbreaker with a tie dye when I was 18. Also: I have mentioned it here before, but Dan Deacon was the singer of a ska band when he was in high school. This is all to say that the psycho punk ska/hyper pop/rainbow rock/rap metal brew 100 Gecs have been cooking recently is probably overdue. At least in my mind. There are better songs on their new record, which came out hours ago, but maybe none are as demented as this ska tune, which at times sounds a bit like “She Has A Girlfriend Now” by Reel Big Fish featuring Monique Powell of Save Farris. Two ska songs in one week: Welcome to John’s Music Blog.
A bilingual Brooklyn drill song from an Italian rapper that samples “Right Here, Right Now” by Fatboy Slim. Alright, sure, let’s go. I’m feeling open this week. Weird one this week. Next time around, I’ll be sure to post less ska and more music that I discovered while listening to boutique internet radio stations.
nothing, nowhere. (Feat. Freddie Dredd & Silverstein) “THIRST4VIOLENCE”
Why don’t we check in on the state of mid-2010s SoundCloud emo rap? After a tepid intro, this song goes straight nü metal. It features both a Canadian rapper and a Canadian emo band. I could see myself rocking out to it at Warped Tour or maybe Ozzfest, gone off that Monster. Any of you people out there fucking with GHOST Energy Drink? That Starburst flavor? I’m curious…
MIX OF THE WEEK: American Ska-Thic: A Portrait OF Midwest Ska: Past And Present
I’m putting a personal moratorium on blogging anything that has to do with BabyTron or ska. Enough is enough. What am I doing with my life? But we gotta end Ska Day at John’s Music Blog in a positive way, with a somewhat obscure compilation of ‘90s Midwestern ska that I owned as a child. Long before they soundtracked Tony Hawk Pro Skater, they were called Jack Kevorkian & The Suicide Machines.
