Fredo Bang x TEC (Feat. Kevin Gates) “Grim Reaper”
There is a song on the new Fredo Bang and TEC record that is named after the fast food chain Raising Canes, but that’s not the song we are going to be talking about today. As much as we love chicken tenders over here at John’s Music Blog, and we really do, the tune we want to highlight features fellow Louisiana legend Kevin Gates. It’s got that perfect bluesy 85 BPM bounce. Plus some steel drums.
Eddy Current Suppression Ring “Swimming Hole”
Forget about Carti for a damn second. Eddy Current Suppression Ring dropped a new song. For those who aren’t up on Australian rock and roll music, the band are one of the greats and probably deserve to be on a short list with a few other Aussie acts whose names start with an S (Scientists; Saints). Around the time Parquet Courts hit the game, someone on the internet called them the “American Eddy Current.” Just to give you an idea of where things were at in 2013.
Speaking of comebacks… It’s been well over a half decade since any solo music from Canadian breakcore pioneer Venetian Snares has hit the internet. On the occasion of an anniversary comp celebrating his longtime label Planet Mu, he dropped a new tune. It’s a hardware acid mindfreak in the classic style, and it even features some technical-sounding British spoken word drops. How’s that for IDM?
I assume this will be the only time multiple Planet Mu releases make it onto the blog in a single week—I already had something lined up from the newest DJ Elmoe record before I found out about that Snares drop, doh! The footwork lifer is on the other end of the braindance spectrum, the end where the mind and the body synthesize with explosive results. The album’s title track is straight-up beautiful American music. The top-end drift alone puts a lot of emo ambient artists to shame.
Xaviersobased-style dissonance; nü-electroclash attitude; East Coast club pound. Cortisa Star has a way of connecting the dots between more than a few internet-fried genres. She also knows how to write a song that might register as a song to a casual music fan over the age of 30. Vertiginous Auto-Tune and crushed catwalk crashes guide “Paris,” but the hooks keep me coming back.
JOHN’S MUSIC BLOG PRESENTS… THE BONUS THREE
John Says: “An excellent alternative rock tune from a band split between Marseille and New York City. I just ate a ‘protein pop tart’ that cost $5.”
B Jack$ (Feat. Zeddy Will) "Get Jiggy"
John Says: “Anthemic, piano-driven East Coast club rap. I wish I was watching more college basketball.”
John Says: “A contemporary jungle master in fine, tweaked-out form. My back hurts.”
Elmoe track best new music I've heard in months.
