Graham Hunt “I Just Need Enough”
Regular readers of John’s Music Blog are aware of this publication’s love for Graham Hunt. Over the past four years, he’s been trickling out a trilogy of records that all hit like some wild combo of Alex Chilton and Odelay-era Beck. The third album is coming soon, and the pop headnodder “I Just Need Enough” is the first song he has shared from it. Graham Hunt: Putting the “W” in Wisconsin.
Keeping things on the contempo breakbeat spectrum, the debut Pink Must record is a modish combo of glitchy drums and skewed digi pop moves. The super duo of Mari “More Eaze” Rubio and Lynn Avery have cooked up some headphone heat that’s good to follow you through grey afternoon runs to the zoot juice cafeteria. A proper bit of slip hop.
Rockout Danny, G Herbo, VonOff1700 “How To Bip”
I wouldn’t say it’s a secret that Rockout Danny’s “How To Bip” features a flip of the Dorian Concept track “Hide,” which is an almost dungeon synth kind of tune that has soundtracked a whole lot of fantasy animation videos on TikTok. Here, producer Krow takes that synth and uses it as material to create a triumphant track; I’m not proud when I say that I thought up a fake genre term to describe the song, one of the worst I’ve cooked up yet, but I did: “wizard jerk.” Being a music blogger is depressing. This version with G Herbo and VonOff1700 is the remix.
Blasé (feat. Jwles & Valee) “Not Now”
It’s Valee putting some Mitten Magic over a French Touch track. In other words, it’s contemporary hip house, and it’s going to make it onto The Report. Can we take a moment to appreciate just how important of a voice Galcher Lustwerk has been over the past decade?
Mario Judah “Love You Anymore”
Mario Judah’s “Die Very Rough” was a rap rock revelation when it dropped in 2020. The song, a blend of moody Southern rap and theatrical belting, like a swooshy-banged Meat Loaf parachuting into contemporary Atlanta, has 44 million views on YouTube. But in 2022, the rapper, who’s always been a bit of a stunt artist, damn near disappeared off of the face of the internet. He resurfaced with an EP a year ago, and now he has released another track. It’s good to hear him singing. I’ve always liked his voice.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Garth “No Rest For The Wicked”
On this 1993 mix, a Frisco legend plays dance music in that ‘90s Frisco way: trippy and funky, with a light touch. Some excellent proto-big beat bumps against house music of all varieties; it’s a tie-dyed b-boy thing, a breakdancing in the sand thing. Anyone have any lines on a good March Madness pool?
RIP DJ FUNK!
Graham Hunt! Chilton + Odelay is a great descriptor. If you knew would you believe it? has become one of my favorites since I caught up on your interview with him. hoping he's coming back to Chicago soon. also love the "How to Bip" remix. VonOff1700 has a fun collab with Rio Da Yung OG out too "Turnt In Real Life".
