Neon Hunk “Live @ Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago 2003”
Well, it’s officially 414 Day, which is a good excuse for me to post some Neon Hunk. I have spent over a decade blogging about Neon Hunk. On some level, that is depressing. I have unresolved childhood issues. Fuck it: Neon Hunk is my all-time favorite Milwaukee band. They acted as a major gateway into the USA freakout culture that both saved and ruined my life. I do not recommend basing your identity on the music you consume.
A bit of a dramatic start to this week’s episode of The Report presented by John’s Music Blog. Let’s all chill out and slide over to New Orleans for a second. 9th Ward Judy hammers this track, which flips a Bobby Caldwell-via-2Pac sample into a berserk bounce ode to not giving a fuck. Vital American music.
I feel like keeping that 8th-note 808 clap energy going, so we are going to swerve back to Milwaukee, where a post-Certified Trapper wave of experimental twerk is picking up steam. It’s nice to hear a rapper shout out Green Bay–a rapper that’s not Lil Wayne, talking about his love for the Packers.
Rae Sremmurd “Tanisha (Pump That)”
There’s some good shit on the new Rae Sremmurd record. My favorite has to be this smooth Atlanta bass number. When he’s on, Swae Lee’s melodic sense is kind of unmatched. Sounds like someone cut a hole in the middle of Magic City and let the dawn shine through.
A lot of talk about legends around here. But you know what? There are a lot of legends in the world. Brontez Purnell is one, for sure. From punk (Panty Raid) to electroclash (Gravy Train!!!) to garage pop (The Younger Lovers) to his zine Fag School and his book 100 Boyfriends… He’s a Bay Area legend who helped clear a path for a new generation. “Jaboukie” dropped recently, part of Sub Pop’s singles club.
DJ St. Anger “100% World Wide I Will Not”
Brand new release on DJ George Costanza’s brand new label Contrapposto Records. Who is DJ St. Anger? Is it Costanza? That is really anyone’s guess. The cover features Chris Griffin and the music sounds like some of the most confusing breakcore I have heard in a minute. John’s Tip Of The Week.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Tim Reaper “HÖR London Takeover - Apr 5 / 2023”
We can’t get enough of boutique internet radio stations here at Music Blog HQ! The Berlin-based HÖR is another one that I seemingly stumble upon on YouTube at least once a week. They record all their sets in front of a weird green tile wall. It looks like the DJs are in a damn bathroom. This Tim Reaper set didn’t happen in that bathroom, though. It’s from a “pop-up” the station did in London. In place of the green tile is a hall-of-mirrors kind of situation. But there’s still some green in the mix. I mean, it’s not like I know a ton of contemporary jungalists, but Tim Reaper might be my favorite contemporary jungalist. This set is as sick and rugged as I’ve come to expect. Amen carnage aplenty.
