Alli Walker “I Like Big Trucks”
As I slowly stumble into adulthood, the question of whether I will learn how to drive is one of many questions that haunt my dreams at night. Anyway, the lyric “I like big trucks / and I cannot lie” is so obvious that I was surprised it hadn’t already been exploited by someone within the mainstream country apparatus. Upon further inspection, it’s been done, but not by anyone in Nashville—by a used car dealer in Enumclaw, WA.
Good juke music can damn near bring a tender tear to this salty millenial’s eye. Been seeing “Move” pop up on multiple trusted feeds over the past week, and who am I to disagree with the experts? Right now, I would like to be on the highway, passing Six Flags Great America, listening to Power 92 reveal itself through static.
There are some production flourishes here—the ultra-widescreen, the band of light that oscillates over a closeup—that tie the “Holy Touch” video to a certain 2000s era of MTV2 programming. Major Hoobastank vibes! I saw Suzy Clue play at a mansion in Bed-Stuy. The kids in the pit were loving it. "Holy Touch" is over four minutes long—a retro gesture in its own right.
“Me and Myaa in this bitch / We like Rick and Morty.” I predict “Choppa Sound” will be one of many Milwaukee rap tunes to coast through the summer. It's got delightful pianos, stadium stabs, and an actual chorus. Fun fact: Yonaa released another song called “Choppa Sound” less than six months ago. And that one is good, too!
I post a lot of bonkers music, but “JACKPOT!!” might be in the one percentile. It’s a speedy rave tune that does a pretty good job approximating the feeling of getting hit with a barrage of pop-up windows advertising online gambling. When it drops into that sloggy jumpstyle pocket? That’s the real jackpot.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Conducta “Rinse FM 4/26/2024”
This joyride from 130 BPM to 160 BPM is a study in the beauty of the breakbeat. Conducta is exactly what I want out of a British dance music DJ, and that says a lot about who I am as a fan of British dance music. We are in rarefied air here—drink it in, people. Then go watch an episode of Come Dine with Me.
