The Beach Boys “Fun Fun Fun (Steve Aoki Remix)”
I know Bloghouse Is Back, but nothing about this psychotic remix says Tuesday night at Cinespace in 2007. It’s more LMFAO opening for Kesha inside of the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk in 2011. This could’ve been a major hit for the uncle-and-nephew duo back in the day—all they would’ve had to do was throw some raps about binge drinking on top. Aoki was commissioned to make it on the occasion of the song’s 60th anniversary. I wonder if they had to get Brian Wilson’s approval before signing off. It’s the future soundtrack to a scene in a sci-fi movie about the ecological destruction of Southern California.
Pam Todd & Love Exchange “Let’s Get Together (Club Mix)”
Let’s cleanse the palate with a very different kind of dance music. Was recently banging an old Ron Hardy tape and was stirred by a hiss-slathered version of “Let’s Get Together.” Is it a perfect piece of disco? No doubt. Would it sound good while riding a roller coaster? I think so. Would it sound as good as “Fun Fun Fun (Steve Aoki Remix)” on that same roller coaster? Honestly… I think that’s up for debate…
Babyface Ray x Veeze x Samuel Shabazz “Houston Babies”
Chaotic Detroit rap that takes “Flossin’” by Mike Jones and Big Moe and shoots it into the darkness. It’s nice to hear Babyface Ray’s voice all screwed down. Interesting song structure: a 33 second intro followed by a 55 second chorus followed by a 22 second verse followed by a 43 second chorus followed by a 33 second verse and then the song is over.
Extreme Animals “You Dropped The Cone”
Original Rainbow Rock Legends Extreme Animals are back with a new bi-weekly song style that Jacob Ciocci is calling “xtreme animals cargo shorts.” Let’s go! “You Dropped The Cone” is a little over a minute long; its YouTube video, which is linked here, taps out at under 45 seconds. A bite-sized blast from a band that the world is always catching up to.
It’s been out for months, but this song might have the momentum to rock all through the year. That Trick Daddy-via-KC and the Sunshine Band sample is just so durable. And the hook is catchy enough to make me long for the days of the monoculture. I want to hear it on a Top 40 station next to “Summer Girls” by LFO. Timeless American pop rap.
MIX OF THE WEEK: “Yesterday’s News with Spiritual Cramp 17th May 2023 NTS”
Boutique internet radio stations: We love them. I’ve been occasionally listening to Yesterday’s News for years now. It’s NTS’s dependable bi-weekly punk show. Here the singer of Bay Area band Spiritual Cramp is in on co-hosting duties, and it’s an enjoyable hour of music and chat. I don’t know much about Spiritual Cramp, but I came out of this episode with the knowledge that their singer goes to see an esthetician. I respect him for talking about that on the air. The band’s new single sounded good, too. If nothing else, the show introduced me to the hooligan new wave of Home Front. Real good stuff.
