Philly Goats “Get Off The Wall”
It’s funny that this club music crew is called Philly Goats because back in the day there was a live rap band from Philadelphia called The Goats. Early in their career, The Roots would open up for them. Anyway… For the purpose of this tune, Philly Goats are FGS Spence and DSturdy. Here they flip a Kool & The Gang standard into pure club chaos. Timeless American summertime waterpark freakout dance music.
A.N.T.I. stands for All Negative Thoughts Inside, which is a good name for a hardcore band. They have a single demo out and it’s under five minutes long. “Possessed” has a fast part and a two-step part and a quick powerviolence-ish part and it’s over. There is something absurd about being in your mid-30s and spending time and energy deciding why one fast guitar-based rock song is slightly more interesting than another fast guitar-based rock song.
Certified Trapper “Trapper Of The Year”
If you are in Milwaukee, go to Certified Trapper’s album release show tonight at The Rave. It features special guests AyooLii and Mula Mar. Now that’s a fucking bill! The record’s title track is one of Certified’s most straightforward, melodic tunes to date. It’s the Milwaukee single of the year.
PinkPantheress “Angel (From Barbie The Album)”
Nothing says the dregs of poptimism like the Barbie movie and its adjoining soundtrack. I watched the trailer for the flick and I’m not exactly sure how I feel. I’ll maybe go see it. I do know how I feel about this song, which sounds like Timbaland producing The Sundays: I like it.
“Nachos” is the standout deep cut on the new Sexyy Redd record. Crazy beat from NoahInHisBag and Okazaki: digi-organ trills flicker over the track like the arms of the robot barista at the robot barista coffee shop I went to yesterday. Sexyy Redd. Certified Trapper. A lot of Jonathan’s Music Blog favorites this week. Should they go into the “Midwest rap moratorium zone” along with BabyTron? I can’t do that to Certified.
MIX OF THE WEEK: “C.C.C.C. and Hijokaidan live on Italian TV (1997)”
This isn’t a DJ mix at all but rather a document of some Japanese noise legends on an Italian television show in the ‘90s. Guess I still got noise on the brain. Enjoy!
