Quick Note: My “Underdog Pop” project RUSTBELT has a new song out. It’s called “Oh My God Here It Comes Now.” You can listen to it here. RUSTBELT is also on TikTok, where I might start to do soda reviews.
This is the best BFB Da Packman track since “Free Joe Exotic,” his pandemic-era buddy comedy collaboration with Sada Baby. Here he flips a Dre standard and drops enough blue punchlines to shame 90 percent of all working stand-ups.
Lauren Bousfield (Feat. Ada Rook) “Hazer”
Two digital hardcore legends team up for a bit of breakbeat screamo. Sounds like an unsanctioned noise set in the middle of a Hot Topic. I’m now in the mood to hit up Auntie Anne’s.
Earl Sweatshirt “Making The Band (Danity Kane)”
I’ve thrown around the cursed term “backpack drill” to describe the music of Evilgiane. Well, it looks like there is more fuel for that dumbass fire, because the most recent Earl Sweatshirt tune is full-on... I can’t say it. I’ll never say it again. Produced by Evilgiane and the legendary Clams Casino, this track has the latter’s melodic imprint. I’ve never played Zelda, but another music writer might reference that game when attempting to describe this song’s synths.
My life would be more simple if I didn’t like pop punk. I only locked in with No Pressure recently. “One Way Trip” is from their 2022 debut LP; beyond the band’s obvious influence, am I hearing a little Face To Face here? Probably just tripping…
Speaking of rock and roll late passes, nobody told me that Deerhoof dropped a new record a few months ago. Their 19th. While confused coastal music bloggers like myself (John from John’s Music Blog) search for novelty, lifer bands put their heads down and iterate on the musical language they have built over decades. “My Lovely Cat” is a good name for a Deerhoof song.
MIX OF THE WEEK: INTL BLK w/ Chief Boima “Welcome to Milwaukee”
Interested in contemporary Milwaukee rap but don’t know where to start? Press play on this boutique internet radio show. It’s hit after hit, put into context by a Milwaukee resident. I’m going to be listening to it a lot. I could listen to “David Gruber” by Mariboy Mula Mar for hours.
