heymylan “Dj Mylan x vamp Violence.wav”
Let’s start with a sentence from the heymylan SoundCloud bio: “I'm heymylan a visionary rapper on a quest to redefine music.” The online avant-garde continues to push into new spaces. Do not ask me what is going on here, because I am too old to know, but to my ears, “Dj Mylan x vamp Violence.wav” sounds a lot like something off of the plunderphonics classic Wild Why by Wobbly. The difference: heymylan is rapper, not a Bay Area culture jammer.
Negatives “Whole Lotta Shakin’”
Taken from a recent reissue of a record that went for $400 the last time it was up on Discogs, this song from Boston proto-egg band Negatives is over-caffeinated rock and roll at its finest. I wonder where these guys went to get their fix. Coffee Connection? Dunking?
I’m going to quote at length from the rapper Wiki’s great interview with NoBells: “Everyone loved BabyTron, then when he popped, it was like, Oh, we’re too cool for BabyTron now. No! I’m rooting for BabyTron, ‘cause I was a fan of BabyTron. Fuck outta here, and his shit’s still hard. You don’t get my point? People wanna be so cool that once something actually gets cool and they making money, they’re like, No, what’s the next underground thing? It’s like, bro, support shit. You just want it to be cool for you? Like, no! You used to be a fan of Nas, and you were like, I’m a fan of Nas. Now it’s like, Oh, I like this album. Be a fan of an artist, man. Respect what an artist goes through. They go through ups, they go through downs, and they go through different shit. People like different things, bro.”
Peggy Gou, Lenny Kravitz “I Believe In Love Again”
Peggy Gou put out a record today, which is how I found out that she collaborated with Lenny Kravitz six months ago. I’m always missing the big songs, like that Megan Thee Stallion track that samples Gwen Stafani. Not bad! “I Believe In Love Again” is good enough to be a Jamiroquai song. Maybe a remix of a Jamiroquai song. I’m no Jamiroexpert.
DCG Shun x DCG Bsavv “Steppers Freestyle”
Last time we checked in with DCG Shun and DCG Bsavv on John’s Music Blog, the two Chicago rappers were teaming up with Jersey’s 2Rare for a pan-regional dance rap freakout. Well, they are back, baby, and going crazy over a mid-tempo soul flipper that sounds a little bit like the early work of a certain Chicago-reared rap producer…
MIX OF THE WEEK: Devnull “BTTO Radio May 19th 2024”
Pete Devnull is a Hall of Fame American Junglist. He’s been doing it for so long that I can’t believe he hasn’t acquired a British accent. He does live in Boston. Second Boston artist on the blog this week. What does it all mean? I’m not sure if I love the city of Boston, but I do love movies set in the city of Boston. If any readers have any cutty Beantown flicks to recommend, sound off in the comments.
