Louie TheSinger (Feat. Paul Wall) “Down Here”
Looks like Louie TheSinger caught some of that Lone Star spirit and double-cupped it into a song with enough country-fried bounce to dry rub an armadillo. Clearly, doing this blog twice a week has made me lose my mind. Pretty good video: Skinny old graybeard Paul Wall was predestined to end up in that fit.
Washed millennials, rejoice. The Neptunes revival is in full swing. Produced by Johnny Goldstein and filled with Korg Triton synths and Chad Hugo perc, “Bops” is an ideal showcase for Coi Leray’s focused pop rap. Would it sound good in the background of an episode of Entourage? Who am I to say…
These Memphis punx came through with a damn droptune dance hit. “Do the frogman/First you hop and then you land.” Alright! Need to teleport into a Deep South basement and see it go off for myself.
When does Z Money not sound slick? Here the vet locks in over some ‘10s-style grandeur, dropping a bar about eating at Panera Bread, of all things.
Radio Shanghai “2-Dimensional Girl”
There is not enough late-’90s Japanese power pop on this blog. Gotta remedy that. Found on the YouTube page of Green Bay rock and roll legend Todd Trickknee, “2-Dimensional Girl” is a kinetic pop blast made for turning off all the lights in your living room, turning on a low-powered strobe, and jumping up and down on the couch.
MIX OF THE WEEK: ZERO L0AN$ “Milwaukee/Trap/House Vol. 3”
Thank you to Twitter user “scrooge mcduck backseat phantom w/ a bad attitude” for calling my attention to this chaotic, inspiring mix of Milwaukee music. It takes a focus on the city’s unstoppable rap scene, but throws all sorts of other shit into the mix—house, rock, gabber—and covers it with a layer or two of digital distortion. Occasionally, Twitter is good for something.
