Lancey Foux (Feat. Sexyy Red) “MM HMM”
Some of my favorite recent rage beats have been the "inauthentic" ones: First the backflipping pop of Jeleel!, and now this British take on the genre. Lancey Foux sounds like he just ate a delicious pie, or maybe some fish and chips, and he won’t shut up about it. Sexyy Red’s version of the chorus needs to be looped and flipped into its own club track.
Fugitive features Blake Ibanez from the late Power Trip on guitar. They play tough thrash not so removed from his old band. If you need a reminder that they are from the Lone Star State, clock the swing style on that breakdown at 2:33. Talk about a Texas two-step!
Rae Santana (Feat. Icewear Vezzo) “Get Outside It”
It’s rare for me to stumble upon a non-backpack rapper from the Twin Cities. YouTube seems to want to show me Minnesota hip hop content: The same day, I got fed a contemporary live Atmosphere set. They were opening up for Slightly Stoopid. That video reminded me of the time I saw the group support Ludacris, which led me to think about this Atmosphere set from Scribble Jam 2003. Those motherfuckers were really in the belly of the Midwest indie rap beast back then; you can feel the scene politics dripping off of the ceiling. “Get Outside It” transcends its geographic novelty. It’s one big hook: The vocals play well with that piano line, which has a nice little pad under it.
How is this the second song called "Space Jam" to be featured on the blog in as many weeks? It’s been two years since the sequel. First a hardcore band called Angel Du$t, and now Dej Loaf. That would make a good tour.
I'm still thinking about that Weezer gig I attended a few weeks ago. It was probably the most fun I’ve had at a show in a decade. "Only In Dreams" is maybe my favorite Weezer song; watching them fumble around with its long build before finally finding the pocket and riding it to glory—that might be the closest to a jam band fan moment I’ve ever experienced.
MIX OF THE WEEK “Peptic Ucler vs. Brain Spit live at Summer Gorefest”
This is not a DJ mix. It’s a "battle set" between two grind bands from deep So-Cal. We plumb the depths of youth culture here at John’s Music Blog. It’s hard to say why. Usually I come out of a New Music Discovery dive with more questions than answers: about my life, my music consumption, and culture at large. Anyway. Enjoy Peptic Ulcer vs. Brain Spit live at Summer Gorefest.
:) very best Weezer tune
