I went on a bit of a contemporary dancehall fact-finding mission recently. You know, “for the blog.” This two-month-old tune was the standout result of my research. I’m not really up on what’s happening in Jamaica right now, but “Mad Out” was the most dancefloor-ready song I stumbled upon. Its goony, lurching chorus works well with the track that underpins it: Big Bunx Riddim. I listened to it once, then I listened to it ten times in a row. Then, a few days later, I heard it blasting out of a car while walking to the train. Then I put it on The Report.
Thank god: Memphis magician Bennett Foster is making pop songs again. Not many are able to write something as perfect as “Hey Boy” or “Superball.” Bennett’s new one is out on Goner and captures that winsome jangle they do so well.
Taken from the new 909 Worldwide comp, Lexxy Jax flips an Eminem standard into total rave chaos, done in what I believe is, broadly speaking, the Frenchcore style. But I’m going to need to get a fact check on that one.
Delco MF’s “March Of The MF’s”
It’s time for a different kind of hardcore. Delco MF’s. That’s a good thing to call a Philly punk band. The music matches the intensity of the name: it’s fast, ripping HC, wrapped up in a shitstyle fidelity, made for aggressively pounding your steering wheel as you drive to pick up a mediocre pizza. The new LP is called 100% Complete & Total Motherfvckers. It’s just over 10 minutes long.
Now that’s what I call a bootleg: My Bloody Valentine sample; Playboi Carti vocal; EvilGianie drums. Music for the contemporary chillout room? I can picture this track ringing out in an “ultra lounge” full of lava lamps and pillows, maybe a few hookahs.
MIX OF THE WEEK: Miley Serious, Lu2k and Toma Kami “The Lot Radio 8/28/23”
Here is a late August throwdown featuring a John’s Music Blog favorite, the drummer of the hardcore band Jesus Piece, and another Parisian DJ and producer. Two hours of intense global club styles, recorded inside a small shipping container in Brooklyn. One major highlight: when they drop a sick electro flip of “My Humps.”
