Quick Note: My “Underdog Pop” project/cup brand RUSTBELT has a new song out. It’s called “You Got Nowhere To Go But You’re Going There Tonight.” I recommend listening to it at night, on headphones, as you stare at a McDonalds off the highway. If you can’t do that, pull up this “visualizer” on your phone and lock in for the duration. Alright. Back to The Report…
It’s simple. I’ll stop posting Sexyy Red songs when she stops making songs that I want to listen to on repeat. And that’s what we like to call poptimism. Seriously, though, as The Martorialist points out, the Katie Got Bandz influence is strong here. Midwest mosh pit magic.
Lenny Kravitz “Fly Away (Dutchman DnB Remix)”
Ever watch the Lenny Kravitz Architectural Digest tour? The one where he shows off his compound in Brazil? The one where he rolls up on a horse? Anyway: Here is a track that delivers exactly what it promises, and in our twisted world, that’s all any of us could ever ask for. A drum and bass remix of a Lenny Kravitz song.
The Replacements “Little Mascara (Ed Stasium Mix)”
This week on John’s Music Blog, we’re rolling from The Lou down to the Kravitz compound, and then all the way back up to the Twin Cities. You might want to re-read that last sentence in the Guy Fieri voice. It’s impossible for me to listen to Tim without seeing a ‘Mats biopic unfold in my mind. Trouble Boys was just too cinematic of a book, so now the record bursts into three dimensions—and that’s with or without these new mixes, which are fine, for sure, but not really the point.
Goldenboy Countup “Im Goin In On Em”
Florida Man Goldenboy Countup’s vocal fry plays a nice aggro cousin to Luh Tyler’s youthful frizzle. “Im Goin In On Em” has a jittery chorus good enough for Doughboyz Cashout; I recommend Goldenboy’s 2022 track “Superstar,” a song that seems ideal for a cheeky bit of autumn sunset contemplation burn.
The Breeders (Feat. J Mascis) “Divine Mascis”
More Gen X alternative rock chaos. More vocal fry chaos, too. It’s all coming together. One nice bonus on the new Last Splash reboot is a Mascis mumblecore take on “Divine Hammer.” When those Deal harms drop...Quite shmacking!
It’s not rap in the American sense, and it’s certainly not rock, but it is a rowdy hour of timeless UK pirate radio freakout madness. And it’s the mix of the week. The energy is through the roof; the only thing that’s missing is a Lenny Kravitz remix of some sort.
